Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon condemns Israel's brutal actions at the Al Aqsa mosque

Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon also condemned the brutal and violent actions carried out by Israeli authorities against Palestinian Muslims at the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

This statement was made by Sturgeon in a tweet on his Twitter account on Sunday (9/5). In his statement, he called on the Israeli government to listen to the calls of the international community and stop its attacks on Islam's third holiest site as well as the illegal evictions of Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

"Attacking places of worship at any time is despicable, but attacking mosques during Ramadan is completely untenable," said Sturgeon, as quoted by Anadolu Agency, Monday (10/5).

"It is also a violation of international law. Israel should heed calls for an immediate end to violence, "added Sturgeon, who used the hashtag #SheikhJarrah in his tweet.

This month, Israel's Jerusalem District Court ordered Palestinian families living in occupied East Jerusalem neighborhoods to vacate their homes. Up to 60 people, including 17 children, will be forcibly removed by the authorities to make way for the demolition and construction of Israeli settler homes.

As a result of the verdict and solidarity with Sheikh Jarrah, Palestinians have demonstrated against court decisions in a number of areas, but also around the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.

In response to this demonstration, Israeli police armed with smoke grenades and stun guns violently dispersed the protesters.

Authorities are also trying to forcibly prevent Ramadan gatherings in and around mosques and on Friday evening, which marks International Jerusalem Day, the surrounding area was the scene of fighting as Israeli forces fiercely suppressed protesters and worshipers.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque and the adjacent Dome of the Rock form part of the Haram al-Sharif and are Islam's third holiest site. The surrounding area is administered by Jordan, however, the Israeli government has claimed the area, sponsored violent attacks by far-right extremists and even attacked the area.

More than 200 Palestinians on Friday night were injured during the Israeli offensive on Al-Aqsa and other occupied areas in East Jerusalem.

Tel Aviv's brutal response has sparked international condemnation around the world with many countries calling on Israel to stop its malicious activities and respect international law.
